Additions and Alterations to the Church of the Holy Spirit

Vavuniya

Church of the Holy Spirit is located at the entry point to Vavuniya town from Colombo and Kandy and was built in 1901. Built to the Gothic Architecture style, this church which stood during the civil war belongs to the Diocese of Colombo, Church of Ceylon.  The old church was inadequate for the overflowing worshippers that attend services and thus required an extension. The existing 100+ year-old church required Archaeological Department’s clearance for the development. The site is located in Vavuniya, the road leading to the site are the Tank Road and Horowpotana Road. In the approximate vicinity, there are notable landmarks such as the Vavuniya pond and the Vavuniya roundabout, which features a clock tower. The concept is a marriage between the gothic architecture of the colonial era and modern architecture of the present day.  The architect wanted modern architecture to enhance the glory of the gothic architecture and also to record the timeline of the different era of construction of the church.
